Authentic. Contemporary. Unapologetic.
Hendre Louw (b. 1977) is a South African artist whose career has spanned over three decades of creative evolution. Moving fluidly between photography, painting, and sketching, hendre’s art is defined by a deep-seated inclination toward impressionism and minimalism, distilling complex subjects into their most essential, emotive forms.
Between 2015 and 2020, Hendre owned and managed his own private gallery, (hl private gallery. woodstock. ct), a pivotal era that allowed him to foster direct connections with international art collectors. This global perspective continues to influence his work today, which can be found in prominent private residences and corporate collections throughout South Africa, as well as celebrity homes in the us and uk.
Currently, hendre’s passion lies in the creation of captivating artwork designed specifically for individuals with a curated, high-end lifestyle. These art-pieces serve as the architectural soul of a space, blending his minimalist sensibilities with a sophisticated, contemporary edge.
Beyond his primary installations, Hendre offers bespoke fine-art portraiture to a limited number of applicants each year, ensuring a highly personal and exclusive creative process. Deeply embedded in the creative industry, he also consults on the commercial side of imaging and occasionally leads high-level workshops and seminars on art and photography.
Whether through a sketched line or a camera, Hendre’s work remains a testament to thirty years of seeing the world with clarity and expressing it with quiet, powerful intent.
Letter from Hendre Louw
To my family, friends and clients all over the world.
I was one of the fortunate individuals who had direct exposure to art from a very young age. My mother was a painter and I distinctly remember me and my two brothers occasionally taking her brushes and paint to attempt the odd stick-man or landscape painting. Little did I know that this would lay the foundation for a career that would later cement the foundations of my very being. My commercial career in art (photography) kicked off in the mid 90’s when analogue was the only frame of reference. No digital cameras or computers.. Just film and the addictive smell of darkroom chemicals. My first paid work was to photograph Thoroughbred horses for a breeder, shortly followed by taking school pics for my schools athletic and rugby team. It was an exciting time of learning and trying to find a voice in the world of “arts”. It would take me another 15+ years before I started to heavily invest in “art-themed” work as a full time pursuit. Painting and sketching followed shortly thereafter, and today I no longer reference to my career as being a photographer or painter… I’m simply an artist using whichever means I have available to communicate a narrative.
I have been extremely fortunate to own and run my own private gallery for almost 5 years. This was a huge stepping stone for my work and exposure to the international market. The bar was raised and also the expectation as I’m as hungry for growth and exploration as I was back in 1993. My sincere appreciation and gratitude goes out to my family and friends who have been my most loyal “subjects” for over 3 decades.
My career is dedicated to my Creator who have allowed me an incredibly fulfilling life of creation, exploration and appreciation for the amazing world of art. Here’s to the next 30 years of creating beautiful things for amazing people.
Warmly,
Hendre Louw
